:::PSYCHO JELLO BLOG ARCHIVES:::7 MAY 2009
The photo above is of Peter and Stephen Stills in the summer of 1967 when both of their bands (Monkees & Buffalo Springfield) were on tour. YAY FOR SUMMER! What's new in the world of the Monkees? Well Mike is performing at a virtual concert, Music Rise over Memorial Day Weekend. Details to come. I really hope he does "Mama Nantucket" and yodles like the good old days. I think I read somewhere that Micky is doing another Teen Idols concert. Peter is obviously recovering (get well soon!), and Davy hopefully will show us his manboobs again. Well what's new here, you might be asking? A little of this, a little of that: -I added a ton of new info to the section on Peter's Infamous Homes. This includes excerpts from David Crosby's autobiography, new photos of Shady Oak, and tales of partying and carousing from someone that lived at Shady Oak in the 70s. Thanks to Steph Waller for her stories. LOVE YOU. -I finally added the Deana Martin Photo Gallery. She was one of the many ladies that Davy was 'dating' around 1967 and she even appeared in the Monkees episode 'Some Like it Lukewarm'. She was also the daughter of Dean Martin. I love when people name their children after themselves, it is soooo narcissistic. But alas. -I added some new info to the Beautiful People section, thanks to the Monkees Day by Day book (<3 <3 <3). The Monkees partied with the best of them, that's for sure. I'm only getting started. Keep checking back for new updates. If you're as bored as I am, please join us at the Psycho Jello Forums. It's been quiet over there lately and that is just lame. ENTERTAIN ME! Oh, and thanks for everyone for visiting this site. I really appreciate it! This site has seen a huge increase in hits the last few months and I feel like it is time for a new wave of MONKEEMANIA, so lets make it happen. Monkee quote of the moment: "Defending my honor, isn't that groovy? A bunch of long haired weirdos and some vicious people."-Mike as Princess Gwen, from Fairy Tale 23 FEBRUARY 2009
Sigh. Winona Ryder and Nez in the 80s. This is the only pic I've seen of the two of them together. Didn't Mike say in an interview how attracted he was to her when they were working together on 'Square Dance'? Does anyone else find that as creepy as I do? Wino forever, I suppose. So a lot has been going on in the Monkee Universe lately. Our lovely Micky Dolenz is competing on CMT's "Gone Country" show. Oh what I would give to party with Micky Dolenz and George Clinton for one night. Oh dear. One of Micky's ex-wives, Trina Dolenz, is appearing on a reality show of her own on VH1; Tool Academy. No, it's not about Davy Jones (sorry, had to go there). I love Trina, but I can't bring myself to watch this one either. The guys featured on the show are so toolish, it's hard to even mock them. I'm going to finally add a little biography and photo gallery of Trina on this site in the near future, because she's a stone fox. I am currently working on a very special photo section for this site of only the scariest Monkees Photos. I'm talking mullets from the 80s, Davy Jones in speedos, Peter's bad hair moments, Micky in women's clothing. The scariest stuff I can find. It's taking forever because I want it to be truly frightening. You know what else is truly frightening? What people google on the internet. According to my analytics data, someone came to my website looking for "davy jones tittays". YOU TWISTED BASTARD. But of course, you probably found what you were looking for. They are the new craze that is sweeping the nation and I suppose they must be celebrated. Oh, and here is the obligatory plea to join our Monkees forum: Vincent Van Gogh Gogh. It's fun. |
PSYCHO JELLO IS 10 YEARS OLD! Wow, I feel so ancient. I can't believe this website has been around for a whole decade. We also just recently had our 200,000th visitor to the site. Hellz yeah. -Thanks to everyone for coming and supporting over the years...despite my lack of updates, my ability to not answer your emails for months and months, and the dwindling Monkees community online. I really only keep this site around for you guys. -Obviously thanks to the Monkees, for being awesome and providing loads of inspiration throughout the years. -Thanks to the late Gloria Stavers, and Ann Moses and Judith Sims for all of the 60s teen magazines, which provided most of the photos and information for this site. These ladies were pioneering female rock journalists before that term even existed. -Thanks to the members of the Vincent Van Gogh Gogh for being hilarious and keeping the dream alive. -Thanks to all of the Dead Homiez (aka Monkees' sites that are gone but never forgotten). This includes Bailey & Andrea's Monkees Obsession Page, The Monkees Pad, Monkeedom, Gleeb, PVS, Kokani's Temple of Dolenz, The Frodis Room, Groovy Gal's Monkees Page....) Your sites were the best. -Thanks to Davy's manboobs, the true 8th wonder of the world. Site Updates Over 30 New Monkees Photos! New & Updated Monkees Links Naughty Monkees Pics Cover Songs list updated More to come! | 21 DECEMBER 2008 ![]() Time flies when you're a Monkees fan, that's for sure. I can't believe I haven't updated this site in 6 months. Of course, is there really much to add to the Monkees saga? I must apologize. Earlier in the year, I mentioned that Davy's publicist should muzzle him (this was after a string of lame interviews and bad press). Last month however, his PR team got him the most press attention any of the Monkees has received in probably 10 years. All Davy had to do was show his manboobs during a concert. They are quite glorious. So glorious, in fact, that this story was picked up by websites all across the internet, most notably TMZ.com and my personal fave, DListed. In fact, the D-Listed discription is so beautiful, I might as well re-post it here: Would You Hit It? 62-year-old Davy Jones' somehow got it in his mind that it was a good idea to show off his pepawchichis while performing in Staten Island, NY this past weekend. Damn. His tittays are no joke. They look like if you slap them, they'll slap you back. I'd love to see a boxing match between Aretha Franklin's champion chichis and Davy's moobs. Obviously, Aretha's rack would be the winner, but Davy would put up a good fight. And yes, I'd let him hit it, but only from the back. Although, Davy would need to pile his boobies into a Playtex Cross Your Heart bra, because those things look like they have the power to knock me out Oh that Michael K (writer of Dlisted) is so genius, it hurts. Anyway, so congrats to Davy for getting more press than any of the other Monkees combined all year long. All he had to do was show his manboobs. This site is nearing its 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY. Can you believe that? Like whoa! And we've had almost 200,000 visitors. That calls for some kind of celebration, like perhaps some new content? Hmm, I'm working on it. I did some research for my page dedicated to the worst Monkees episode of all time, Monkees Race Again, but that episode is sooooo lame, even my recap puts me to sleep. We'll see what happens. I'll try and update the site soon. In the meantime, allow me to direct you to my real pride and joy, my blog. I write about pop culture, fashion, books, the 60s, sports, politics, and whatever else crosses my mind. Also, if you need that instant Monkees fix, please join us at Psycho Jello's very own message board, The Vincent Van Gogh Gogh. We won't bite, I promise. There are now over 220 members, so it can get pretty lively over there, especially when we talk about Davy's manboobs or certain body parts of Peter Tork. Oh, and I think a couple months ago I added some pics to the photo gallery and never mentioned it. So check those out as well! | 25 JUNE 2008
I've been updating the site all week long, adding some photos, fixing some links. I added the Stand-Ins and Friends Photos back to the site. So far only the David Pearl section is up and running because it's going to be a real pain to add all of the photo pages and I have a short attention span. I'm trying, I swear! I added some Phyllis and Samantha pictures that I miraculously was able to recover back from when the entire site was deleted. I've tidied up the menu bar, the HEAD mini-site, and the Naughty Monkees Page. I also went old-school and decided to bring back the Guestbook, in case some of you prefer that to making comments on my blog entries. ALSO UPDATED: --Nurit Wilde Photos + Biography have been added/updated. --Sally Field Photos have been added --Lulu Photos have been added. I have dozens of Samantha Dolenz photos to add! There are some really great ones that I've never seen before. I also updated the links page, which basically means I deleted a bunch of Monkees sites that aren't around anymore. SAD! In preparation for some of my episode reviews, I was wondering what your least favorite episode is, and why? I forced myself to watch "Monkees Race Again" last week and let me say this....it was torture. I don't have any idea why "Monkees in Paris" gets such a bad rap when episodes like this exist. At least in "Monkees in Paris" they get to run around a foreign country and make out with girls. In "Monkees Race Again" they just appear to be stoned and bored. | 28 MAY 2008 ![]() Can anyone identify the woman in that picture? According to Corbis (and presumably Henry Diltz, who took the photo) it was taken in August of 1967 on the set of their tv show and the caption says it is "Linda Jones, the wife of Davy Jones." However it looks nothing like the REAL Linda Haines Jones (unless it is a very unflattering angle), and Linda wasn't even dating Davy at the time, much less married to him. I'm confused. Someone tell me who this chick is, please. Another request: If anyone can send me, by email (lulublonde@gmail.com), the mp3 of Naked Persimmon from 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee, you would be a lifesaver. I have it on vinyl but I do not have anything to convert my records into mp3s. Or if someone can find a link to a FREE and SAFE site where one could presumably download this song. Or if Rhino is reading this, maybe eventually getting the rights from NBC/Jack Good/whomever and releasing it on CD in decent quality? A lot to ask, I know. Hopefully someone will make my dreams come true. Let's see here, what else has been going on? There have been more controversial and truly sad comments made about three of the Monkees by another member that-shall-not-be-named (*hint*-- in the 80s he had a mullet and wore speedos and zebra spandex ensembles). I'm not talking about these comments on this site (trying to focus on the positive here at Psycho Jello), but if you want to read these comments, we're talking about them at Psycho Jello's very own forum, The Vincent Van Gogh Gogh. I know I give Davy a hard time. Sometimes he deserves it. However, in order to placate the Davy fans that come here, I have a picture of Davy looking studly back in the 60s: ![]() I'm currently working on a new layout, a Psycho Jello F.A.Q page, and a tribute page to my favorite Monkees song of all time, "Auntie's Municipal Court". Stay Tuned. | 10 MARCH 2008
Oh, Davy. Why can't you GO AWAY? And I mean that in the most sincere, caring way. Just go away for a while. Have some 'me time'. At the very least, [stop talking to the press]. Especially when you say things like this: "I can't be responsible for Peter, Mike and Micky and their behavior. I'm not saying they have bad behavior, but it just takes one occasion where somebody has something to say and everybody gets blamed. I can't be responsible for Peter's mouth or Mike's mouth or Micky's mouth. They have to be able to feel the same way about me. So I'd rather do it myself." He also mentions that he can hit notes that Elton John and Paul McCartney can't hit anymore, and how the Monkees are better than Hendrix, Joplin, etc. because at least the Monkees are all alive. Did you also hear that [he got sued] for 75,000 dollars because he told a company that he was allowed to sing "I'm a Believer" in a commercial, even though he never asked permission and does not own the copyright. Whoops. Apparently over 30 years in the music biz hasn't taught him that much. Whoever is his publicist/pr person/manager needs to muzzle him. I don't update this site as much as I used to, mainly because I'm very busy with work, but also because I've run out of resources to add to the site. There's only so many old teen magazines you can buy, and I definitely will not pay the ridiculous ebay prices for them. Also, I'm running out of ideas of new and exciting glimpses into the Monkees phenomenon. I am however, very inspired by the [Vincent Van Gogh Gogh Forums] here at Psycho Jello. And yes, this is a blatant plug. The forums have only been around for a year and already, we have over 100 members. If you aren't satisfied with the non-updates here, the forums are fairly busy with new posts almost every day. Obviously we talk about all aspects of the Monkees (including their personal lives, naughty behavior, which Monkee is annoying us at the moment, weirdo fans, and more), but we also talk about other music, culture, the 60s, and life in general. We also have the coolest, funniest members and a very open-minded environment for Monkees fans of all kinds. | 18 JANUARY 2008
Today I added [17 photos] to the Photo Gallery. I've also been slowly adding pictures to the wives & girlfriends gallery that somehow went missing after I switched webhosts. It's a very boring process that consists of visiting archive.org and seeing if any of my pictures are miraculously still floating around on the internet. Some of them are, surprisingly. I saw "I'm Not There" this week, and in one of the party scenes the Monkees' song "(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone" is played. That was probably my favorite part of the movie. I'm such a nerd. I love random Monkees moments in pop culture, however. I'm going to write an episode review of "Monkees Race Again", which is my least favorite Monkees episode of all time. I like writing negative reviews, what can I say. I think one of my favorite things I've written for Psycho Jello is my 33 1/3 Un-Tribute, if you want to know the truth. I listened to the first six Monkees albums about a month or so ago. It had been years since I had listened to most of them, and I decided that Headquarters is seriously a genius record. Sometimes you forget how good it really is. | 13 NOVEMBER 2007 I finally decided to change the layout a little bit. Hurrah! However, my free copy of photoshop ended, so who knows when there will be another layout change. Whoops. I'll try to keep things interesting even without flashy new graphics. Or if someone knows where I could get a copy of photoshop for free, let me know! Anyway, I've been editing some of the current content, checking my grammar, adding and deleting some really snarky comments, and generally making the site a bit more polished. I also added a section from my old Beatles website, The Beatles Domain, called Monkees and Beatles. I saw the entire content copied on another website and decided that I might as well bring back the original. I also resurrected the Lewis and Clarke Expedition biography from the Stand-Ins site. I used to be totally obsessed with the L&C Expedition and I even have the one album they made for Colgems in 1967. Definitely try and check out their bio. I found this tribute to Phyllis Nesmith on YouTube that's set to "You Just May Be The One" and uses photos found on Psycho Jello. It's super cute. Phyllis still has a lot of fans out there, including me, although lately I've been more into Samantha (especially her music career!). Interestingly enough, the most popular section of this website is the Wives & Girlfriends section. Which wife/girlfriend is your favorite? | 26 SEPTEMBER 2007
The new layout will be up soon. I'm also going to add new content, new photos, update some old sections (finally the Stand-Ins section will be up and running again), and of course, fun fun and more fun. A lot of my time lately has been spent on my personal blog, which some of you know about already. I try and update it much more regularly than this site and it focuses on all of my interests in life; music, fashion, popular culture, books, politics, the 60s. I'm glad people are starting to support it and visit it on a regular basis, and I love all of the comments! Feel free to check it out sometime. I'm a big fan of blogs and personal sites. Beth's personal site is being updated again, which is great. Kari's new blog is awesome. I really enjoy Jezebel and Gawker. Although the Monkees are fine and dandy, it is nice to have a wide variety of interests. But back to the Monkees, I have many more episode snappies and Samantha Dolenz photos to add to the site, and someone is sending me old magazine articles, so there's a lot to look forward to. | 11 SEPTEMBER 2007 note: here's my nonsensical monkees related rant of the moment... Wow, did anyone see Britney Spears ruin what's left of her career at the VMAs on Sunday night? I don't think we've witnessed a final nail in the coffin like that in a really long time. It's interesting to see the rise and fall of her career, and compare it to the rise and fall of the Monkees' career(s). The Monkees' initial run was obviously much briefer than Brit's (wayyyy more musical competition back in the 1960s of course), but they never really had an obvious personal or professional meltdown the way she has. I hear a lot of people say "oh, give her a break....she's so young...this is all she knows...she's been performing since she was a child." And yes, she has. She's also obviously not a very intelligent woman. But you know what, there are many "child stars" that somehow managed to enter adulthood and parenthood without showing their private parts, and without going out every single night during a custody battle, and not creating "art" for years, and driving around with an infant in their lap in the front seat on the interstate. Davy and Micky, for example, both began their show biz careers very young (younger than Britney, in Micky's case). Both were became young fathers right when their careers were dwindling, much like her. They somehow managed to keep their shit together. We continued to see them getting work, acting, performing, trying to remain relevant. Obviously the Monkees, much like Spears and many other teen idols, have had their battles with substance abuse. But unlike Spears, they all reached a point where they knew it was time to take control of their own lives and GET BETTER. For themselves. For their children. I've been thinking about The Monkees' downfall of 1968-70 and it wasn't remotely spectacular or as embarassing as Ms. Spears'. I mean yeah, the "Changes" album was an abomination of bad taste, but at least they were responsible (and smart enough) to ride out their contract and get shit taken care of. Same withn 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee, and that horrible tour of Mexico in 1969. At least the Monkees completed all of their obligations and tried to be professionals. The Monkees' merely faded out of teen idoldom, whereas Britney seems to cling to this image that was created for her when she was nineteen years old without doing any of the necessary work. Part of the reason why the Monkees continue to be successful for younger generations is because they represent a really great era in music and pop culture. They represent youth and energy and fun. We never had to see overweight Davy prance around onstage, or Peter wandering around wasted without pants, or Micky stumbling out of the Troubador wasted with Harry Nilsson. We were spared from all of these negative images of our idols. That's why they continue to bring in fans; because in all of our minds, they are the young, rebellious, fun-loving guys who will always be stuck in the 1967 versions of themselves. We remember them at their peak. Part of me feels bad for Britney Spears because she will probably not be remembered as such. I really fear that she will be remembered in the same way as Anna Nicole Smith and Elvis in his later "Fat Elvis" period. All of her hard work as a teenager has turned her into a shadow of the former self. Luckily the Monkees' were able to evolve and move on from teen idoldom. I hope Britney can do the same. | 21 AUGUST 2007
I'm in the process of creating the "About Me" page for this site. Somehow its much easier to talk about the Monkees then talking about myself. I'm also redoing my personal site/blog, so I finally can have a place to talk about all my interests other than the Monkees . When I finish it, i'll let everyone know. I need your support! Anyway, speaking of support, the lovely Ashleigh is sending me very nice quality episode captures which I'll post soon. I don't have the capability to do captures anymore, so its nice of her to help out! I've noticed that The Forums and this site have been totally dead the last few weeks. Where is everyone...on vacation or something? I wish I was. | 25 JUNE 2007
Today I added six new photos to the gallery. Mainly of Davy & Peter. It's the best I could do (thanks google images). I tried to bid on some old teen magazines on ebay a couple of weeks ago, but was outbid by someone. Sucks for ya'll, because I was going to scan most of them for this site (for free) and we all could be happy. But such is life. And I refuse to pay more than $10 on an old Monkees mag. In other news, She Hangs Out is back. It's another fun Monkees fansite that was around back in the day. Very exciting. Micky Dolenz can be seen on VH1's "Rock Docs: Monterey Pop" episode. It's been airing all week long. He doesn't have a huge part in it, but it's nice to see the guy. Off on a tangent now, but did you know that...The Monkees still have fans from around the world? You might be surprised to hear that this site is not only popular in the US, Canada, England, and Australia, but also receives a lot of visitors from Brazil, Japan, Spain, and Ireland. Very Nice. That's all I have for now. Just trying to make sure this site gets updated every now and then. If you want to join in some fun conversation, there's always the forums | 6.4.07 I added 6 new photos to the Samantha Dolenz gallery. If you were one of the Go-Gos (aka a member of) Psycho Jello's forums you would have already seen some of these. But that's just one of the perks you get for joining the fabulous fans at our forum, now isn't it. Some of these photos have never been seen, however. Hope you enjoy them. I'm in the process of fixing up the wives section, especiall the Phyllis Nesmith Tribute. After that, I'm bringing back the section on the Monkees' Friends & Stand-Ins, so if you're hot for some David Price or the Lewis & Clarke Expedition, its you're lucky day...or uh...summer or something. | 5.22.07 I updated Samantha Dolenz's bio with some information about her brief singing career in the mid-1960s. Besides being the disc girl on Top Of The Pops, Sammy recorded some singles for Strike Records and had a minor hit in the UK. You can also now buy vintage jewelry chosen and created by Samantha and Ami Dolenz at their ebay store Bluebell Boutique. They sell nice pendants, necklaces, and one of a kind jewels that would be a perfect gift for the webmistress for a certain Monkees site that you're visiting right now....er....nevermind. Just visit their store and look at some pretty jewelry. Today I also updated the Monkees Links page, which basically means I deleted some sites that disappeared or haven't been updated in years. If you have or know of a good Monkees site that has actually been updated THIS YEAR, feel free to comment in the comments section or email me. | 5.13.07 Monkees Related News -Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will be airing The Monkees' movie HEAD on June 1st at 2am, in case you haven't seen it in awhile (or at all) -The campaign to get the Monkees in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is an uphill battle, but some enterprising fans have started an online petition that already has over 800 signatures.
| 4.8.07 In the 1960s, there were many detractors of the Monkees' music career, stemming from the fact that on their first two albums, they weren't allowed to play their own instruments. On this site, I have articles from teen magazines that generally worship and praise the Monkees, and I thought to be fair, I'll add some articles that were not too kind towards our guys. So, I have compiled all of the mentions of The Monkees in Crawdaddy! magazine, so you can see how the serious rock press thought of the Monkees during their heyday. --The Monkees in Crawdaddy! New and Noteworthy: -Washy has updated her site with an about me section and a Psycho Jello shout-out. -All of my old blog entries on this site can be found in the archives section, complete with the comments feature so this site can still be interactive. -The Psycho Jello Forums are doing great, with over 60 members! | 2.5.07 I love reading through sites like Hollywood Hangover to get a feeling of what living in L.A was like in the late 60s. There are a lot of rare photos and really cool stories there from the people that hung on on Sunset Strip and went to the cool parties and the hip bars. Occaisionally there's a Monkees reference. A reader recently said this about a young groupie that probably hung around Reine Stewart and the other Byrds girlfriends: "It was so much fun. And last, but certainly not least, NICOLE TACOT (Nicky), the original SUNSET STRIP groupie, who went out with all the BYRDS when she was 13 in 1964, died in Feb. 2004 in her home in LONDON. Even though she grew up in WEST HOLLYWOOD, (and was my first girl friend-we were the same age), she married STEVIE WINWOOD for about 10 years and never left ENGLAND. She met STEVIE at PETER TORKS house in BEACHWOOD CNYN., where CROSBY, STILLS, and also JIMI HENDRIX hung out and jammed, in '68. She moved to ENGLAND with STEVIE and also sang on some demos for APPLE RECORDS, produced by GEORGE HARRISON. But they never came out. R.I.P. NICKY...." I wish I could have seen CSN jam with Jimi Hendrix at Peter's house back in the day. Sigh. Here's another pic of Davy smoking circa 1966, on tour. The Psycho Jello Forums have been going well, with over 30 members and counting. We discuss all sorts of Monkees and non-Monkees related topics ranging from Davy's lame taste in girlfriends in the 1960s, to mod fashios, current politics and all that falls in between. | 1.22.07
Hello friends. After some discussion with Beth and others on her forum CFAS I have decided to open a message board here at Psycho Jello: --The Vincent Van Go Go I'm debating whether or not to delete my mailing list soon. Sure, there are over 300 members, but no one ever posts anything...and mailing lists are like sooo five years ago. I already deleted the guestbook, I mean....who needs one anymore, right? This whole message board thing will be an experiment to see if there is still enough of a Monkees online community out there to have an interesting discussion group. Now I know what you're thinking...there already IS a Monkees message board...Monkeeland...duh! I know that, and I read and post at Monkeeland too. And I still will. With Psycho Jello's forum, I want to really encourage younger Monkees fans (those of of the livejournal and myspace age) as well as old school fans to come together and discuss the fellas without any kind of limitations I've noticed lately that myself and others have become nostalgic for the good old days of the online Monkees community, so I'm just trying to get it started again. So join the forums and we can start talking about random weird things like the hottness known as David Pearl, or ask each other why everyone likes Phyllis Nesmith so much, or which Monkee did the most drugs. There's also general music discussion, 1960s chit chat and more. P.S- Today I also added some links |
I've been remembering the good old days of Monkees fansites. Some of you may remember those days, between 1996-2001, when there were over 300 Monkees fansites and when everything was colorful and animated and fans joined webrings and used the word "groovy" a lot and the hot site was The Monkees Pad. Well, even if you don't remember these days, I have made a page about the Oldschool Monkees Fansites. Take a trip down memory lane. Groovy! Psychedelic! And feel free to reminisce with me and add some comments or email me. I like to remember the good old days. I added 23 photos to the Photo Gallery this week. Most are from Getty Images and an Australian photo agency (those pics are obviously from their Australian Tour) and have watermarks, but the pictures are interesting enough, I thought they were worth posting anyway. | [home] |
