These days, if you're a rock star, your car is almost a symbol for where you are in your career. The rap stars all drive Bentleys so they can be "big dogs", as people like Master P and Jermaine Dupree claim. Other stars drive Cadillac SUVs, BMWs, Porsches, and Mercedes, all of which are equipped with DVD players, playstations, 24 disc CD players, and of course, speakers galore. In the Monkees time, however, the car wasn't so much of a status symbol for rock stars, it was just a way to get from the house in Laurel Canyon to the Strip. The Monkees didn't really spend too much energy making sure they had the best cars, or even the most (although Mike did win the honor for the most cars bought in a single year, I'm sure). Anyway, here's a look at How to Live Like a Rock Star; Monkees Style (cars).

Peter's Cars

Peter, the bohemia of the group, seemed to be more interested in buying cool party houses and doing drugs, than worrying about buying tons of cars. In his garage, he had a Honda motorbike, a red GTO (both given to him by the creators of the Monkees), and a Mercedes. But his real baby was his bright red MGB-GT. This British car was definitely expensive and very sporty. Peter had the inside decked out in black, and added a stereo tape deck. What a stud.

Micky's Cars

Micky's car buying was also less extravagant than most. Like Peter, he also had a Honda motorbike and a GTO (his was maroon with smoked windows). Appparently Micky used to ride his motorcycle down Laurel Canyon Blvd. at like 80mph, which for anyone who's ever driven on Laurel Canyon Blvd. can imagine how fucking scary that would be. Actually, for most rock stars living in Laurel Canyon, motorcycles were the perferred way to travel cos they were great on the winding streets of the Hollywood Hills. Micky also had a VW Beetle that he later gave to his sister Coco, a VW van which was painted like the American Flag; White on the top, red in the middle, blue on the bottom. He also took all of the seats out of the back (oooh, he turned it into the Shagging Wagon!) Micky also owned a bright red Mercedes convertible, and a gyrocopter, which may or may not count as a way of transportation, depending on if he actually used it or not.

Davy's Cars

Davy and Nez were the two Monkees who grew up poor, so obviously once they became famous, they started spending money like it was going out of style! Davy had a Honda motorbike, a GTO (blue, courtesy of Screen Gems), a hearse that cost $300 (Hearses were big in the late 60s; Neil Young was also a hearse enthusiast), and a special silver-gray Honda sportscar. His Honda was one of only FIVE in the whole United States. He had it imported from Japan. He had a few other sportscars, a VW, and a roadster.

Mike's Cars

Mike's weakness for cars is practically legendary. In one single year he bought SEVEN cars. That's more than most people buy in a lifetime. It may seem like nothing compared to the extravagant rock stars of today, but for 1967, that was INSANITY. Mike was definitely the Master P of his generation, let me tell you. He spent money like it was going out of style. And since he had been writing and producing for the Monkees since the first album, he was richer than the other Monkees and could afford to spend millions on homes, cars, and other things.

Like the other Monkees, Mike had a Honda motorbike and a GTO (his was white). He also had a Buick Riviera, a '57 Chevy, an old pickup truck, and assorted motorcyles. His most famous purchase was that of a Radford Mini-Cooper, which he bought in England on the Monkees' Tour in 1967. His Mini-Cooper was dark chocolate brown on the outside, light brown on the inside. The windows were tinted black, and had all sorts of electronic equipment in it. On the dashboard was a sign that said "NO SMOKING". Mike's Mini-Cooper was the most EXPENSIVE MINI-COOPER EVER BUILT, costing $9,100 (three times as much as most Mini-Coopers cost). Mike had it customized to the hilt, but unfortuntely the accessories he put into it are unlistable. But we can only imagine....

Mike also bought Phyllis a Mercedes (which she crashed in 1968), and a limousine of some sort. Besides all that, Mike also had a Lamborghini 400 2+2 (worth $14,500), a Jaguar XKE, a Jeep, a speedboat, a dune buggy, and a Lear Jet (supposedly). Even by today's rock star standards, those are a lot of cars!
