David Pearl

Ahh, the infamous David Pearl. The man some consider 'The Fifth Monkee'. I personally think the Fifth Monkee is Chip Douglas, but David Pearl was also important in Monkees History. He was also a stud squared, man.

David Pearl was born in 1944 in New York City and he lived there until he was eight years old. He then moved to Georgia for a little while, but he spent much of his growing up in Texas. He met Nez while Nez attended San Antonio College. David was studying Pre-Med for a couple years before deciding to head to Hollywood. Mike had already left for Los Angeles the year before, so when David arrived, he headed right for Mike & Phyllis' apartment. It was there when he met the man who was to become his best friend: David Jones. Around this time, the Monkees were already filming their show and Mike and Phyllis finally got enough money to move out of their apartment, so David stayed there for a little while. Then once he got sick of it, Peter Tork invited him to stay at HIS place, which he did for about six months. Then he moved in with Davy for about three months. Geez, what a freeloader;)

Since many of Mike's friends ended up in Hollywood after Mike had moved there, he did the nice thing and got them all jobs working on the Monkees project. David was really interested in acting, and his friendship with Nez and Davy helped get him a job on their TV show.

David Pearl became Peter Tork's stand-in on the television show. As well as being a stand-in, Pearl also was featured in many Monkees episodes (you can usually find him in the background, in party scenes, or group scenes). Around this time he also met Davy Jones and eventually became Davy's closest friend and confidant. David Pearl was a member of the so-called "San Antonio Mafia" (basically Nez's flock of friends from Texas). He later went on to be The Monkees co-manager, you know.

David Pearl was a total stud. He was hot, man, let me tell you. According to "Monkeemania", David Pearl was "good looking and obsessively fashion conscious" and that sometimes he fared better with women on the road than a couple of the Monkees. Now, I personally don't believe that for a second, but whatever. Actually, when the Monkees did their first ever concert in Hawaii on December 3, 1966, David Pearl and Davy met the delighful and charming Linda Haines. Both of the guys fell for her RIGHT AWAY. Unfortuately for Davy, however, Linda went into David Pearl's room that night and they continued dating for pratically all of 1967.

Davy describes the meeting of Linda: "Pearl talked to her more than I did and she ended up in his room. I thought about it for a minute or two and then she became just another pretty girl I had fallen for that day.....Pearl and I had adjoining rooms and the next morning I opened my door and there she was, coming out of his bathroom. I tried to think of something casual to say as I wandered in, but nothing would come out. "I didn't sleep with him," she whispered as we passed. "I thought you weren't going to stay," I said. "I didn't sleep with him," she repeated. Two years later we would be married."

But that's getting ahead of the story, now isn't it? According to Linda, she and David dated for about eight months, probably in 1967. Their breakup wasn't full of bad feelings or anything, they both just fell out of sync with eachother. Soon after, Linda being dating David's best friend DAVY. She married Davy (twice). David Pearl was the best man at their second wedding. That's kind of odd.

David was more associated with The Monkees television show than with their music. He can be seen in many Monkees episodes, "Your Friendly Neighborhood Kidnappers", "Mijacogeo", "Monkees Get Out More Dirt", "The Christmas Episode", "99 Lb Weakling", "Monkees in Paris", and most second season episodes. He plays the Wolf Man in "Monstrous Monkee Mash" too, you know. David Pearl, as well as most of the stand-ins, was heavily involved on their tours. He was their roadie and their tour manager and stuff like that. How nice.

The only question I have is WHERE IS DAVID PEARL NOW? David, honey, if you're reading this, EMAIL ME! Or if YOU know where to find David Pearl, EMAIL ME. Thank you.
