An Evening With The Nesmiths

An Evening With The Nesmiths

as told in Phyllis' own words
from Tiger Beat-- Dec. 1967

Mike's work day ends around seven o'clock (when he doesn't have to record) and the minute he walks in the door he starts undressing -- shoes, socks, shirt --until he has only his levis on. Then he'll say "April, will you bring me something to drink?"

After he has a cold drink, Mike and I will sit down and talk about what's happened during the day. Mike is also a great one when it comes to noticing my work during the day. If I've polished the chrome in the bathroom or cleaned the kitcehn cupboards Mike will say, "Wow, this really looks groovy."

I wouldn't say I really enjoy house cleaning, but it's one of those things that you do and it becomes an extension of me because I like the house to be as neat as I am. When Mike notices, and he always does, it makes it seem very worthwhile.

Big Texas Meals

When we have dinner, Mike likes a steak and a salad. He's a Texan, so he just likes a hunk of meat and he doesn't like anything pancy. I often fix things like pork chops and steak. Mike makes the chili in our house, which is his favorite meal. I made it once and when he tasted it he said, "It's not bad, April," but it wasn't too goo either. When Mike makes the chili it's so hot with spices it absolutely clears out your sinuses.

Sometimes Mike will come home and he will have had a big business lunch and he won't be hungry, I may have fixed a big dinner, but I just warm it up later. When Mike and I were first married he wasn't too crazy about my cooking, because my parents were more New England oriented, Mike was used to highly seasoned, rich Texas cooking, but still not fancy. So, he said, "You've got to learn." And he taught me.

Mike Loves Shopping

Mike doesn't like sweets of any kind; and hardly ever eats starchy foods like potatoes or bread. He loves vegtables. I think broccoli is his favorite food in the whole world. Mike told me when he was young his mother would come home from work and sometimes as a special treat they would go down to Walgreen's Drug Store to have a soda. His mother would order a banana split and Mike would order a bowl of broccoli. This was a treat for him.

Mike also loves grocery shopping. I think it's because they never got to buy groceries when he was a child. He told me that he would go to the store for his mother and he would see someone ahead of him buying 40 dollars worth of food for a week and he would think, "That's impossible. Nobody can do that, you would have to be a millionaire to do that!"

Mobbed In Market

When we had David Price and Davy Jones and my brother living with us -- and that's four big guys in the house who are always hungry -- Mike and I would go out shopping each week and we would buy three carts full of food, 120 dollars worth of food per week! Mike can't go shopping with me anymore, because the last time we went shopping he had to run out of the store because the kids started mobbing him!

After dinner we like to talk and once in a while we'll watch TV. We don't watch it just to watch it, only if there's a good movie or show on like "I Spy" or "Mission Impossible." Mike likes action packed things that are subtle and require your complete attention. Most of the time he plays with the car; or he may put on a record or play a while on his guitar or the organ and we'll sing together.
