Lulu
Lulu was born Marie MacDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in Glasgow, Scotland in November 1948. Wow. She has a really long name. She began her pop music career in England in 1964, and the next year, she became associated with famed producers Mickie Most (Hermans Hermits, Donovan, Gary Lewis & The Playboys). With his help, she acheived 7 Top 40 hits. But she was unknown in America until she appeared in and sang the theme song to the 1967 movie "To Sir With Love", which became a #1 single in America. It's a good film, I suggest you check it out. Anyway, that same year, in June, the Monkees specifically chose Lulu to open their sold-out first UK Tour. It was after this time when the English press began linking Davy and Lulu romantically.
Davy admits in his book that he and the Scottish siren were indeed a couple. I don't know for how long they were together, but I can estimate it was in 1967 and possibly the following year (while he was seeing Deana, Sally, & his future wife Linda).
Teen magazines in the states didn't pay much attention to the Davy/Lulu romance, choosing to focus more on him and Sally, but in England, the Davy/Lulu pairing was big news. And in 1968, Lulu, Davy and Maurice Gibb (of the Bee Gees) were part of a "love triangle" which became constantly watched by the press. However, by early to mid 1968, Davy ended his playboy ways and became serious with Linda (which is a good thing, as she was pregnant with his child) and Lulu became serious with Maurice. Maurice and Lulu got married in 1969.
Lulu and Maurice divorced sometime in the mid 70s, before the Bee Gees became megastars. Lulu, unfortunately, did not see her popularity soar. She had a smattering of hit singles in the UK but nothing quite as large as her fame in the 1960s. In the 1990s, she appeared on a Take That single and had a semi-successful album "Independance". She has written an auto-bio where she claimed that her and Davy were "close friends", and while she was on the Rosanne show last year, guess who paid a surprise visit? DAVY. How ironic?
If anyone knows what's going on with Lulu lately, contact me. Yeah
Ok then....
