Rumours:
- Nell asks: I ran across a site that mentioned something about Micky's bisexuality. Is this true?? That he's bisexual?
There are a lot of Monkees sites that really suck, lets just get that out in the open. They don't have enough good content so they make up a whole section devoted to the supposed romance between Micky and Mike or Davy and Mike. It's all stupid. There has been no evidence that any of the Monkees, or Micky in particular swing both ways. In fact, to quote Peter "I don't think there was half a homosexual among us!" Micky has made it VERY clear in his biography that he is attracted to the ladies (tall, blonde ladies in particular), and so if you ever see a section on a website that makes a joke out of the Monkees feelings towards eachother, just laugh at how pathetic their site is.
- Peter Tork has been plaster casted by the infamous Cynthia Plaster Caster.
Nope. Read this for the full explanation from Cynthia herself. (page 3)
Little Known, and Not-So-Little-Known Facts:
- "Daydream Believer" was originally called "Cheer Up Sleepy Jean".
- Mike's Gibson "Black Beauty" guitar is one of THREE in the entire world (he plays it during "Listen to the Band" on 33 1/3, btw). Chet Atkins and George Harrison own the other two.
- Micky's favorite book is J.R.R Tolkien's Ring Trilogy
- On a related note, the word "frodis" came partly from the Ring Trilogy; one of the main characters is named FRODO Baggins. "Frodis" was also Micky's codeword for weed ("Hey man, let's go smoke some frodis, dig?"). The mystery is solved.
- Davy has a 14 inch neck.
- Mike's shoe size is 10B.
- Mike and Phyllis were introduced by David Price, who later became a stand-in on the TV show.
- The Monkees are in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most #1 Albums in a single year. In 1967, they have FOUR #1 albums. Wow.
- In 1989, The Monkees got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame due to fan petitions and fan support.
- Jason Nesmith [Mike's son] auditioned for a role on the "New Monkees" TV show in the 80s and DIDN'T MAKE THE CUT. Needless to say, the show totally sucked.
- Davy's daughter Sarah was in the movie "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Like, totally.
- Peter introduced John Lennon to the drug STP.
- Before the Monkees, Nez was in the Air Force.
- "I'm a Believer" was the biggest #1 hit of 1966 (7 wks at #1). "Daydream Believer" was the #2 biggest hit of 1967 (4wks at #1)...the biggest hit of 1967 was, incidentally, "To Sir With Love" by Lulu (5wks), who was dating Davy at the time. Hmmm.
- The Monkees were #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for 37 weeks between November '66 and December '67. "The Monkees" was #1 for 13 weeks starting on November 12, 1966 before being knocked off by "More of the Monkees" on February 11, 1967. "MOTM" was #1 for an astonishing 18 weeks until being knocked off by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Yet, after only ONE WEEK, The Monkees were back at #1 on June 24, 1967 with "Headquarters". They were knocked off by the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" after one week, and The Fabs and the Pre-Fabs were at #1 & #2 for the entire summer. The Monkees fourth #1 album of the year was "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones LTD", which went to #1 on Dec 2, 1967 and stayed there for 5 weeks....The Monkees had two Christmas #1 albums & singles in a row. But again, the Monkees were knocked out of the #1 spot by the Beatles (this time with "Magical Mystery Tour").
- Davy did a version of Bob Dylan's "It Aint Me Babe" on his first solo album in 1965. It's truly frightening.
- Davy brought Jan Berry (Jan and Dean) on the Monkees 1967 tour to help him recover from his horrible car accident. Also on the tour plane, at various times, was Lynne Randell, Samantha Dolenz, Phyllis Nesmith, the Sundowners, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, famed photographer Henry Diltz, The Buffalo Springfield, and The Lovin Spoonful. Now that sounds like a party to me!
